Ellerton Priory, Marrick, Coast to Coast
Ellerton Priory is located on the south bank of the River Swale, almost opposite Marrick Priory. It was a priory for Cistercian Nuns and Scherduled Monument with Historic England. Confusingly, Ellerton Priory lies in the civil parish of Ellerton Abbey.
Although there are several attempts at establishing the history of Ellerton Priory it the most historical facts are that it was founded in the late 12th century either by the Egglescliffe family or by Wamerus, the chief steward to the Earl of Richmond, or by Wymerus of the Aske family. It was partly torn down in 1342 by marauding Scots.
Ellerton Priory Swaledale
Cromwell's commissioners inspected the priory in 1536, ensuing on the Dissolution of Monasteries order. During their visit the Priory was formally surrendered to the Crown and dissolved the following year. The priory was partly rebuilt in the 18th century to convert it into a romantic Gothic ruin for the benefit of the nearby Ellerton Abbey House. In the background to the image is Johnny Brow, the steep riverbank of the River Swale. Above Johnny Brow is the hamlet of Marrick.
Ellerton House Mrs Pumphrey's Tearoom
Ellerton House (aka Ellerton Abbey), can be viewed from the Coast to Coast path as it leaves Steps Wood for Marrick. The house adjoins Ellerton Priory, and is itself a Grade II Listed Building. It was formerly a shooting lodge built by the Erle-Drax family in the 1830's. More recently, Dianna Rigg acted the part of Mrs Pumphrey from the popular t.v. series All Creatures Great and Small, in a room of this house.
