Dab Dumps, Jurassic Coast, Robin Hood's Bay
Dab Dumps is a coastal feature of Robin Hood's Bay. Dab Dumps lies within the Maw Wyke to Beast Cliff SSSI and the Beast Cliff (Robin Hood's Bay) SAC. Maw Wyke is near to Hawsker Bottoms, and Beast Cliff is at Staintondale. Hawsker Bottoms is about 4 miles south east of Whitby Marina. The coastal cliffs are a complex mix of both hard and soft rock, and are considered to be one of the most important examples of vegetated sea cliffs of England's north east coast.
Cliffs of this nature sustain coastal vegetation in the harder crevices and ledges; the milder, intermixed slopes are populated with scrub and covets. The ground conditions undergo a continuous change in size, shape and vegetation, due to the action of rain and sea on the softer rocks.
Dab Dumps Robin Hoods Bay
The coastal formations between Dab Dumps and Maw Wyke Hole (and extending further north to Redcar) are the finest Lower Jurassic sections of coast in Northern Europe. Between Boggle Hole and Dab Dumps can be seen a series of small faults associated with the dome of Robin Hood's Bay. The dome structure is obvious in the image. The dome is one of several inversion structures found in the Cleveland-Sole Pit Trough Depositional Basin.
There are dense deposits of tills in the mid areas of Robin Hood's Bay, which contain numerous small erratics producing varying beach pebbles. A little east of Boggle Hole at the base of the cliff you can find ammonite faunas known as Oxynoticeras and Epararietites. There are also larger trace fossils such as Teichichnus, Rhizocorallium, Ophiomorpha and Diplocraterion.

There are also fossils such as bivalves, crinoids and belemnites. There can also be found in this area flat, subcircular, iron-rich concretions which too contain fossils. These are known as Scours and are formed when upwelling currents winnow out the finer material leaving smaller coarse grained sediments and shell debris. These attract iron diagenesis.
