Boundary Stone near Greenhow Plantation on Urra Moor
Boundary Stones, Urra Moor, Coast to Coast
The North Yorkshire Moors is peppered with Boundary Stones, often in long rows with stones spaced about 100 yards apart. The Coast to Coast path encounters them by and by, but not so much elsewhere as on Urra Moor, Bilsdale West Moor and Bilsdale East Moor, where there are several rows and hundreds of Stones. Those on Urra Moor are found along Carr Ridge between the top of the rise from Clay Bank, and Round Hill. In actuality they extend westwards off Urra Moor all the way to Lord Stones Country Park.
Carr Ridge Boundary Stone
Most of the Boundary Stones on Urra Moor mark the boundary of the Earl of Feversham's Estate. This is part of the stone row that crosses the Coast to Coast path opposite Jackson's Bank.
Feversham Boundary Stone
This is a Stone of the line pointing south west, a kink in the north west-south-east line from Jackson's Bank towards Cowkill Well above the Cast Hills on the north west of Urra Moor. The ridge of Cold Moor is on the horizon.
Feversham Stone
This Stone is part of the same boundary line as previous, but one that is placed further north east towards Jackson's Bank. From the Stone further member's of the row can be seen down the hill, lining up in a more or less dead straight line.
Bilsdale and Raisdale
The final stone of the south west row, lined towards where Bilsdale meet Raisdale. From here the row veers south east, to continue its primary direction.
Boundary Stone Cleveland Way
This Stone is actually alongside the Cleveland Way, where the path again intersects the boundary row near to Maiden Spring. Viewed from the north east, Cold Moor is seen in the background.
BS & Cairn
There are three ancient relics in this image taken at the beginning of the gentle ascent to Round Hill. This is the point where the Stone Row is again bisected by the Cleveland Way, with one of the stones doubling up as a marker stone. Opposite to it is a large walker's cairn. Not so easily discernible in this image is a Bronze Age Bowl Barrow, just south of the cairn.
