Black Hill Cross, Glaisdale, Coast to Coast
Black Hill Cross is a Scheduled Monument with Historic England. It is located on the western rim of Glaisdale Rigg at a busy moorland road/path junction. A narrow road leads west, down the side of Glaisdale Moor and into Street in Great Fryup Dale. The main moorland road heads north east to south west. A path leads from the said junction, east to the Coast to Coast path on the east face of Glaisdale Rigg. Yet another path leads north west to a quarry on Black Hill and finally there is a path heading to and down the south east face of the Rigg, and then to Brow Side Farm and the main Glaisdale Road in the valley.
The Cross overlooks Great Fryup Dale and Heads. Its original shaft no longer exists and has been replaced with a stone that stands in the Cross's original position and in its original gritstone base. The main moorland road is known as Yarlesgate.
The Cross is not in the position described on the OS map but is in fact on the east side of Yarlsgate and south of the road to Street. Black Hill rises to 326m, where it houses a trig cairn. A number of other Stones rest nearby, in a south west direction, such as the Hart Leap Stones, the Rokan Stone, the Glaisdale Stone and the Glaisdale Rigg Tall Cairn.
Black Hill Cross Yarlesgate Cross
Black Hill Cross stands at the junction of paths on Glaisdale Rigg, overlooking the Great Fryup Dale hamlet of Street. The main moorland road it sits beside is known as Yarlesgate, and the Cross is also known as Yarlsgate Cross. The base of the cross is a roughly cast block of gritstone. The original shaft no longer existing, another has been fixed into the original base. The base dates to between the 9th and 15th centuries when such wayside crosses were prevalent, the main purpose of which was to act as a wayside route marker, and, to remind travellers of the Christian faith. Wayside Crosses are Listed because they significantly contribute to our understanding of medieval religious customs.
Yarlesgate Cross Glaisdale
There are only about 350 wayside crosses in England and Wales, most of which are concentrated in Cornwall and Dartmoor. Wayside Crosses are much less common elsewhere, although the North York Moors is one such place where there are small groups of them.
