Coast to Coast path from Northcliffe Caravan Site
The Coast to Coast path finally meets the North Sea coast at Hawsker Bottoms, about 4 miles south of Whitby. The path follows a tarmac road from High Hawsker tin the Northcliffe Holiday Park, which is a caravan site. A path to the east of the caravans leads north east in a bee-line to the coast, attaining it as it meets the Cleveland Way coming from Whitby from the north west. A little further south along the coast is Normanby Stye Batts, Far Jetticks, Rain Dale and Craze Naze. En route to Hawsker Bottoms you will have passed over the Cinder Track on a road bridge. The Track parallels the coast until reaching Robin Hood's Bay.
The path proceeds past a wildflower meadow and joins the Cleveland Way on the cliff top above Pursglove Stye Batts. This is also where the Oakham Beck, coming from the south west, spills into Maw Wyke Hole. Steps lead down to the foreshore, and a ford allows access to steps on the opposite headland. Wyke is the Yorkshire coastal term for a safe area in which to anchor a boat. The Oakham Beck terminates in a waterfall onto the foreshore.
Pursglove Stye Batts
Standing on the cliff top of Pursglove Stye Batts you can see across Maw Wyke Hole to the opposite headland, were the cliffs are sheer and are domicled by a variety of seabirds. There is a clear view as far as Widdy Head, after which the coastline can no longer be sighted. The ammonite species Dactuylioceras Tenuicostatum have been found at the base of the cliff at Pursglove Stye Batts, dating to the Lower Jurassic period, i.e.between 201.3 million years ago to 174.1 million years ago.
Wildflower Meadow Hawsker
Numerous species of wild flowers can be seen in this image of a wildflower meadow. It lies to the east of Northcliffe Holiday Park, edging to a Northcliffe Slack, half-way to Limekiln Slack.
Northcliffe Slack Hawsker
Northcliffe Slack is attractively festooned with a variety of greens. This Slack is prominent when walking along the path through Limekiln Slack to the Cinder Track.
Oakham Wood Maw Wyke Hole
At the foot of Northcliffe Holiday Park the Coast to Coast path spends its last furlong to Pursglove Stye Batts by leaving the caravan site and trailing through the eastern edge of Oakham Wood. Within the Wood is Oakham Beck, which concludes its journey to the North Sea by plunging from the sea cliffs as a spectacular waterfall (during wet weather)l at Maw Wyke Hole.
