The Village Centre in Reeth, Swaledale
Reeth, Muker, Coast to Coast
Reeth is the largest village in Upper Swaledale and is bordered on the east and the south by two large watercourses, namely the River Swale and the Arkle Beck. The Coast to Coast path passes through Reeth en route to Richmond. Reeth is raised high above the River Swale and Arkle Beck, thus avoiding the likelihood of river flooding.
Reeth's growth as a village is largely the result of its past mining activities, the evidence of which is patent in the surrounding countryside. The large village green, low cost village-centre parking and eating facilities attract crowds of holiday makers. Reeth is 11 miles west of Richmond, and 5 miles east of Gunnerside.
Reeth Evangelical Church
Reeth Evangelical Church is located opposite the south fringe of the village centre. The church building has a Grade II Listing. It is made with hammer-dressed stone. The roof is steeply pitched, made with Welsh slate. Its facade includes a clock and bellcote.
Wesleyan Chapel Reeth
The Wesleyan Chapel is located to the north east of the village. Observed from the village centre the long angular rim of Fremington Edge dominates the background. The Chapel has a Grade II Listing with Historic England. It dates to 1840 and is built of Watershot stone.
The Laurels Reeth
The Laurels has a Grade II Listing with Historic England. It is located to the south east of the village green. The property is a 3 storey house dating to the late 18th century. Its Listing ensues from its special architectural or historic interest.
Langhorne Cottage & House
Langhorne Cottage and Langhorne House are a pair of semi-detached houses, sharing a Grade II Listing with Historic England. These properties are located to the north west of the village green.
War Memorial Reeth
The War Memorial on the village green is shared between Reeth, Grinton and Marrick, and honours the fallen soldiers of the First Workd War 1914-1918.
Old Temperance Hotel
The Old Temperance Hotel is a Grade II Listed Building, located in Market Street, Reeth. In the image it is the three storey building on the right.
The Green, Reeth
The Green is a house located immediately west (right) of the Evangelical Chapel. It was once 2 cottages and a stable, erected during the 17th and 18th centuries, but has now been converted to a single 2 storey house. The property has a Grade II Listing, which describes it as having a coursed rubble, stone slate roof.
Reeth Bridge
Reeth Bridge spans the Arkle Beck on the south east of the Village, providing vehicular access to Low Fremington and Grinton. The Bridge was erected in the 18th century by John Carr and it has a Grade II Listing. There are 3 segmental arches separated by cutwaters which form pedestrian passing places on the road.
