Arncliffe Wood from Ingleby Cross
Arncliffe Wood, Ingleby Arncliffe, Coast to Coast
Arncliffe Wood is divided into four sectors, namely Arncliffe Wood, South Wood, Mount Grace Wood and Scarth Wood. The woodlands are easily accessed along a road from Ingleby Cross, passing All Saints Church and Arncliffe Hall. The Coast to Coast path follows this route, swinging right as the woodland is entered and making gently uphill on The Bank, a broad track through South Wood, to its southern extremity where it meets the Cleveland Way. The path then turns back on itself, climbing to the ridge top and the western edge of Scarth Wood Moor. It is bordered on the east by a boundary wall which separates the Woodland from Beacon Hill on Scarth Wood Moor.
Arncliffe Wood
After leaving the farmland of Mowbray the Coast to Coast path follows a minor road through Ingleby Arncilffe, heading directly towards the vast sharp raise of the Cleveland Hills, wooded to the very moorland top with the trees of Arncliffe Wood.
Ingleby Arncliffe
A short minor road from Ingleby Cross leads to the woodland entrance. The properties on the south side of the road are part of the Arncliffe Hall estate, and are Grade II Listed with Historic England. They include the stables and farmery.
Arncliffe Wood entrance
Arncliffe Wood is an interesting mix of deciduous trees and conifers growing on the steep western face of the North York Moors, the Cleveland Hills, to the immediate east of Ingleby Arncliffe. The Wood stretches up to the ridge top to allow entry to the moorland beyond. Much of the Wood consists of young second generation trees.
Arncliffe Wood Cleveland Way
At the southern end of the South Wood sector of Arncliffe Wood the Coast to Coast path meets the Cleveland Way as it comes north from Osmotherley towards the North York Moors. As one, the two paths climb to the ridge top, passing the WT and TV station and attain Scarth Wood Moor.
Tire Bank Arncliffe Wood
The wide panorama of the Vale of Mowbray can be seen from Tire Bank, near to its juinction with the Cleveland Way.
Mount Grace Wood
The south sector of Arncliffe Wood is known as Mount Grace Wood. Mount Grace Priory is built within the west side of the wood and is completely surrounded by it to the north, east and south. A little to the east, beyond the confines of Mount Grace, is Lady's Chapel. This is the shrine of the lady of Mount Grace and is a place of Marian (Virgin Mary) devotion and pilgrimage.
WT and TV Station
The weather and TV Station is located on the ridge top of Arncliffe Wood, sitting on the 280m contour immediately adjacent to the Coast to Coast and Cleveland Way shared path.
