St Stephens Church, Fylingdales, Coast to Coast
St Stephen's Church is unique in so far as the belfry stands tall and is visible from miles around and in particular from the Coast to Coast path where it adjoins the Cinder Track at the north end of Robin Hood's Bay. Littlebeck Wood is only a few miles west of Fylingthorpe, and the unique jurassic coastal features north of Robin Hood's Bay can be attained from the coast 1 mile to the east and stretching north.
The Church has a Grade II Listing with Historic England, and dates to 1868-1870. The roof is of red clay tiles that offer further distinction when viewed from a distance. The Bell Tower is described as a very tall 4 stage saddleback tower.
St Stephen's Fylingthorpe
Fylingdales has two Anglican churches iknown as St Stephen's. The oldest of these is actually located in Church Lane, Whitby, and dates to 1822, and the later one, shown in the image, dates to 1868-1870 and is located in Fylingthorpe. The older church has had a church upon its site since the medieval ages.
St Stephens New Church Fylingdales
St Stephen's in Fylingthorpe is known as St Stephen's New Church. The actual address of St Stephen's New Church in Fylingthorpe is Thorpe Lane, Fylingdales, Robin Hood's Bay YO22 4RR, as distinct from the older church of St Stephen's, which is located in Whitby. Visitors are welcome. The Church is open each day between 9am and 3pm.
Fylingdales Memorial Cross
At the south side of the Church, near to the main entrance is a large Memorial Stone Cross. It has a tapering plinth with carved letters bearing the names of those who served during WW1 between 1914-1918. There are 63 names inscribed for WW1, of whom 41 were lost in battle. The inscription also includes a further 22 names of those who served and died during WWII between 1939-1945.
St Stephen's Apse
St Stephen's Church has a magnificent east facing Apse. The main entrance to the Church is from the south, facing Thorpe Lane. The rear of the Church looks onto the Cinder Track. The interior of the Apse is rib vaulted and is supported by multi stage corbels. The windows are set in moulded reveals and are stained glass, each of them having a pictorial panel of a saint.
