Iron Banks Wood, Richmond, Coast to Coast
Iron Banks is a narrow stretch of mixed deciduous woodland that stretches along the west bank of the River Swale and which extends south west into Park Wood, at the rear of the Gaza and Jaffa Barracks at Hipswell. Iron Banks is a mile and a half south of Richmond Castle and a half-mile south of Easby Abbey. The Coast to Coast path extends through the wood on its way to Hagg Farm and Old Colburn.
Iron Banks River Swale
After passing through Richmond the Coast to Coast path re-visits the River Swale as it enters Iron Banks on a westerly loop of the River opposite to Abbey Wood.
Iron Banks Gill Bridge
A wooden bridge conveys the Coast to Coast path over Iron Banks Gill as you enter the woods. The Gill is quite wide and deepens as you follow it uphill. The Gill falls short of merging with the River Swale despite attaining a position only yards from it. Instead, following the contours of the Wood, it bides its time, until finding a suitable spot to rush into the Swale.
Hagg Beck and Hagg Wood
As the path through Iron Banks Wood nears Hagg Beck the woodland becomes Hagg Wood, which extends and broadens out in the south, into Park Wood. At the Beck the path ascends to another level via a wooden flight of steps.

Once immersed within Hagg Wood the Coast to Coast path continues to climb leveling out at 110m. Iron Banks Wood and Hagg Wood populate the south riverbank of the Swale which is quite steep.
