Orton (or Raisbeck) to Kirkby Stephen
Across the Limestone Fells to Kirkby Stephen
From Orton and Raisbeck, the Coast to Coast continues eastwards across a broad landscape of limestone pasture and open fell. The route passes through country shaped by exposed rock, shallow valleys and scattered farming settlements, with the high Lakeland mountains gradually receding behind as the Eden Valley and the Pennines begin to influence the view ahead.
Across Crosby Garrett Fell and the surrounding uplands, the landscape reveals a long history of human occupation. Prehistoric monuments, ancient earthworks, old tracks and traditional field boundaries sit alongside the natural features of the limestone, while the route through Smardale introduces a quieter landscape of woodland, fell and the deep valley of Scandal Beck.
The articles below explore the limestone landscapes, archaeological sites, villages and natural features encountered along and around this stage of the Coast to Coast. Together they provide a closer look at the country between Orton and Kirkby Stephen, completing the Lake District section of the journey and leading towards the Pennine uplands beyond.
