Flat Howe Round Barrow Coast to Coast
On Ledging Hill, part of Westerdale Moor, near to Blakey Road is a Bronze Age Round Barrow known as Flat Howe. It is located to the north of a track at the north end of a huge agglomeration of disused coal mine pits. There is a base of a broken medieval wayside cross in a recumbent position at the top of the Barrow. The Barrow is about 200m west of the moorland road between Castleton and Rosedale. The Lion Inn is less than 1 mile south of the Barrow.
The position of the Barrow is flagged by the nearby Margery Bradley Boundary Stone and Waymarker which stands at the road side, at the head of the track leading to the Barrow.
Flat Howe Ledging Hill
Flat Howe is a Scheduled Monument. It is a Bronze Age Round Barrow with a broken cross at the top. It is about 20m in diameter and rises to just less than 1 metre. There is a surrounding ditch encircling the Barrow but this has become infilled with time. The fallen remains of the cross are split into two sections and not all of the remains are presesnt.
Disused Mine near Flat Howe
From the path leading to Sweet Banks, looking south towards Jacksons Path and the Lion Inn, there are more than 100 disused coal mines. It is difficult to distinguish them from Round Barrows, as there is very little difference in appearance, even from only a short distance away. This is one such.
Nearby Guidestone
This Guidestone is about 200m from Flat Howe and is located at the roadstide in a west north west direction. It has a Grade II Listing. On the south face of the Stone is inscribed FRO END and simply means that it is the end of the Farndale Road from Hollins Farm to Rosedale.
Common Lizard Flat Howe
Ledging Hill and most of the surrounding area is frequented by Common Lizards. This one almost ran across my feet.
