Innominate Tarn, Haystacks - Coast to Coast

Set high on the flanks of Haystacks, Innominate Tarn lies within a shallow rocky hollow, its irregular shoreline edged by stone and seasonal grasses. The water is often still, reflecting the surrounding outcrops and the shifting light of the high fells, while small islets punctuate the surface and add to the sense of quiet enclosure.

From this elevated position, the landscape feels intimate rather than expansive, shaped by rock, water and subtle changes in level. The tarn’s setting, tucked among the broken ground of Haystacks, gives it a character distinct from the larger lakes below, offering a place of stillness within the wider mountain environment.

Known for its association with Alfred Wainwright, who chose this as his final resting place, the tarn carries a quiet sense of reflection, where landscape and memory are closely intertwined.
