Raven Crag, Nannycatch Gate - Coast to Coast

Raven Crag is a prominent, rounded rock outcrop on the eastern shoulder of Dent Fell, looming above Nannycatch Gate. It’s a striking feature for walkers on the Coast to Coast route, easily visible as the trail descends steeply from Dent’s summit to the south side of the crag, eventually reaching the valley floor near Kirk Beck.

This rugged escarpment marks the northeastern corner of Dent Fell. To its north, Nannycatch Road winds northwest toward Cleator Moor, separating Dent Fell from Flat Fell. As the road nears the village, it crosses Wath Bridge — an old crossing over the River Ehen.

The southeastern tip of Dent Fell rises to a minor summit at 283 m, marked by the jagged outcrop of Raven Crag. Its steep south and east faces expose Ordovician rock, laid down some 450 million years ago — a lasting monument to deep geological time.

Viewed from below, Raven Crag dominates the skyline at the eastern prow of Dent Fell. Together with the opposing outcrop on Flat Fell, these twin sentinels appear to flank Nannycatch Gate like silent guardians of the pass.

Raven Crag from Kirk Beck

The Coast to Coast path descends steeply from Dent Fell, opposite Linkrigg Gill, and meets Kirk Beck near the edge of Lowther Park Plantation. Just a hundred yards upstream, Raven Crag towers above—marking the eastern edge of Dent Fell with quiet authority.

From the top of Flat Fell’s southern shoulder, Raven Crag rises across the narrowing gateway of Nannycatch. Below, the path descends toward Standing Stones Farm and Near Thwaites, skirting the steep eastern flank of Dent Fell’s formidable outcrop.
