Coast to Coast

Haweswater to Orton (or Raisbeck)

From Haweswater into the Limestone Country

Leaving Haweswater, the Coast to Coast turns eastwards through the quieter countryside beyond the Lake District fells. The route passes through Burnbanks and crosses rolling farmland towards Shap, where the high mountain landscape begins to give way to the broad uplands and limestone country lying between the Lakes and the Eden Valley.

Beyond Shap, the character of the walk changes again as the route crosses open moorland, pasture and areas of exposed limestone towards Orton and Raisbeck. Ancient tracks, scattered farms and prehistoric remains reveal a landscape shaped by centuries of settlement, while limestone pavements, scars and shallow hollows increasingly distinguish the country underfoot.

The articles below explore the villages, archaeological sites, limestone landscapes and natural features encountered along and around this stage of the Coast to Coast. Together they reveal a quieter but remarkably varied part of the route, marking the transition from the great Lakeland fells towards the open country around Orton and Raisbeck.
