Holey Moor, Carlton, Coast to Coast
Holey Moor is a short stretch of moorland located east and south of Carlton Moor and west of Bilsdale West Moor. From Carllton Moor you can look south east across Holey Moor towards Snotterdale Plantation. Holey Moor used to house the Carlton Gliding Club but this was abandoned some time ago. In April 2008 the buildings and remains of the club were removed. Nothing of it now remains.
Thackdale begins in Holey Moor, leaving it on its south edge where it enters Snotterdale Plantation.
Holey Moor
As far as moors are concerned Holey Moor is reasonably level. This is not surprising considering it once housed the Carlton Gliding Club. Its now demolished hangers and other buildings were atop Holey Moor, as were the runways.
Moorjocks on Holey Moor
A track leads from the mid west side of Holey Moor to the south east tip. The moor is populated with many Swaledale sheep, the local name for which is Moorjocks. Swaledale sheep are thought to be a mountain breed descended from a small flock of sheep that were on baord a ship of the Spanish Armada, wrecked off the coast of Cumberland.
Holey Moor Snotterdale
The south side of Holey Moor descends towards the lower elevation of Snotterdale Plantation. Beyond the Plantation, Coal Hill on Whorlton Moor can be seen, rising to 360m. East of Coal Hill a saddle dips the ridge top to 334m, only to rise back on Black Moor to 373m.
Whorlton Moor
From Holey Moor near to Snotterdale Plantation a clear outlook presents itself over the section of Whorlton Moor which lies to the north of Scugdale. Whorton Moor also lies to the south of Scugdale, which can be seen rising in the background.
Snotterdale
From Holey Moor it is possible to look down the huge bowl of Snotterdale to where it merges with Scugdale. The gentle scarp of Whorlton Moor, above Rakes Intake and where it meets Barker's Crags can be seen at the end of the eastern valley side
