Castle Motte is located at the top of Station Road, on Castle Hill in Castleton and is currently within the grounds of the private properties of "Castle Hill". The steep sided Motte is on the west boundary of the property but is shielded from view from the adjoining road by tall trees. There are also trees growing on top of the Motte. The Motte is in the form of a horseshoe, and measures about 200' x 160'.

A Motte is a European fort that has a wooden or stone keep built on top of a steep raised area of ground. It was usually accompanied by a walled courtyard known as a Bailey and fortified ditch, but there is no evidence of a Bailey with this one. There is still a rampart, which is on the western summit. The Motte was first recorded in 1242.
