The main part of Hartley Valley is wooded and occupies the north east and northern foot of Low Out Wood, heading towards Hartley Quarries but passing around it to reach the Merrygill Viaduct. Seen from Hartley Birkett the course of the Beck through the deciduous valley is patently obviious, even though the beck itself cannot be seen.

After passing the Hartley Quarries, Hartley Beck flows beneath the Merrygill Viaduct south east of Hartley Village. This viaduct was designed by the famous Cumbrian engineer Thomas Bouch, and has a grade II Listing. It is built of locally sourced limestone and has 9 arches, the tallest being 78 feet high. The arch spans are 30 feet each, and cover a length of 366 feet.

The Hartley Valley around Merrygill Viaduct is densely wooded and an attractive habitat for the indiginous roe deer.

Peering down over the wall of Merrygill Viaduct allows you to perceive the Hartley Beck as it passes beneath the huge arches spanning the valley.

Hartley Beck leaves the woodland of Hartley Valley on the outskirts of Hartley Village, where it forms a deep, narrow channel between the road and the village gardens.

Hartley Beck adds charm to Hartley Village as it flows the length of the ribbon village.

There are several twee ornate bridges spanning the Beck providing access to abutting residences.

At Hartley Fold the Beck modifies its direction, from north to west and makes a beeline towards the River Eden 1/2 a mile distant.

Heading in a direct path to reach the River Eden, Hartley Beck flows swiftly alongiside the Kirkby Stephen road opposite to Hartley Hill.

Within a shout of the Beck's confluence with the River Eden an almost hidden gem appears on the Hartley Beck. A series of unnatural, stepped falls, produce a refereshing turbulance of vapour and water.

Hartley Beck converges with the River Eden as the River snakes past Kirkby Stephen on its eastern border.
