Surrender Bridge, Healaugh, Swaledale, Coast to Coast
Surrender Bridge is located on Surrender Road, at a point where the bridge spans Mill Gill, or the Old Gang Beck. It is located within 100 metres of the Surrender Smelting Mill. The road provides passage between Feetham and Langthwaite in Arkengarthdale.
Surrender Bridge is instantly recognisable as the bridge in each opening scene of the James Heriott 1980's t.v. series "All Creatures Great and Small". The bridge spans the Old Gang Beck near the Surrender smelting mill at the foot of Novel Houses Hill on Reeth High Moor, and in doing so crosses the route of the Coast to Coast path.
Surrender Bridge
Surrender Bridge is a Grade II Listed Building, as are the nearby Surrender Smelting Mills. The unusual name of "surrender", used also for the nearby Surrender Moss and Surrender Ground, most likely originate from a perversion of the old English word "suran", meaning peaty or damp.
Mill Gill aka Old Gang Beck
Surrender Bridge is a traditional single span, single carriageway stone bridge. Mill Gill, or Old Gang Beck, originates mostly from the foot of Great Pinseat on Reeth High Moor. Its half-life name is Flincher Gill. However, it very soon changes to Hard Level Gill as it reaches Level House Bridge, and it changes again to Mill Gill after subsuming Ash Pot Gutter.

From the south bank of Old Gang Beck you can view Surrender Road passing over Surrender Bridge and stretching on over Novel Houses Hill en route to Arkengarthdale.
Surrender Smelting Mills
The Surrender Smelting Mills are within a hundred yards or so of Surrender Bridge, on the north bank of Mill Gill. They are Grade II Listed Buildings.
