Rest Dodd, Bannerdale - Coast to Coast
Rest Dodd is a broad, grassy fell rising to 696 m in the quieter reaches of the Lake District’s Far Eastern Fells, forming part of the long ridge between the Bannerdale and Rampsgill valleys. Its southern slopes are skirted by the Coast to Coast path as it traverses Satura Crag toward The Knott, and from many angles the summit dome appears as a gentle undulating rise above the trail. The ridge to the north links Rest Dodd with The Nab, another of Alfred Wainwright’s fell lists, while the boggy western side above Yewgrove Gill contrasts with the steeper eastern faces dropping toward Hayeswater Gill. This landscape lies close to other notable sections of the route, including Prison Crag and the historic Filter House, and links naturally with neighbouring walk segments such as Riggindale, Small Water, and Brock Crags along the Patterdale to Haweswater stage.
Rest Dodd
Rest Dodd seen from The Knott on the Coast to Coast path reveals a broad, rounded summit dome with a gentle, grassy west face that contrasts with a steeper descent to the east toward Rampsgill. Around to the north-east the terrain becomes more pronounced as the fell drops into the Rampsgill valley, reflecting the varied topography of this Far Eastern Fells ridge.
Rest Dodd and The Nab
The Coast to Coast path curves around Rest Dodd, a 696 m Wainwright, as it crosses from the top of Satura Crag to The Knott. From Rest Dodd a ridge extends north to The Nab, another Wainwright perched above the Martindale valleys. This wild upland lies within the Martindale Deer Forest, a red deer conservation area; walkers are advised to avoid disturbing deer, especially during the calving season from May to mid-June.
Bannerdale
From Satura Crag on the Coast to Coast path, the deep, intense valley of Bannerdale stretches northward, flanked on the west by Beda Fell and on the east by The Nab rising toward Rest Dodd. Through this classic Martindale landscape flows Bannerdale Beck, descending toward Ullswater and defining the valley’s long, sweeping line.
Rest Dodd and High Raise
From the summit of Angletarn Pikes there is an expansive mountainscape unfolding toward Rest Dodd and its subsidiary The Nab, with the long spine of the High Street ridge rising beyond. The broad crown of High Raise sits prominently to the rear of Rest Dodd and slightly to the north-west, forming the backdrop to this section of the Far Eastern Fells.
