Gold Hill, Live Moor, Coast to Coast

Gold Hill is located on the north bank of Live Moor and faces north over Faceby Plantation and the extensive flat plain of the Vale of Mowbray. Gold Hill has a precipitous drop from its north face, falling to the Plantation. Within the conifer woods, and immediately below Gold Hill, is Little Bonny Cliff, the twin of Great Bonny Cliff further to the east, below Faceby Bank. There is a good view from Gold Hill to Whorl Hill and across the Vale to Teeside.

Faceby is 2 miles north west of Gold Hill, and Carlton in Cleveland is 3 miles north. The Coast to Coast path wends along the top of the Hill from
Scugdale towards Clay Bank and Lord Stones.

Gold Hill and Live Moor

Scanning the Cleveland Way from Faceby Bank, Gold Hill, which rises to 320m, is seen in the middle distance above Faceby Plantation. Beyond Gold Hill is Live Moor, which summits at 315m.

Gold Hill and Carlton Moor

Scanning the Cleveland Way from Live Moor, Gold Hill is seen, again rising up from Faceby Plantation to 320m, whilst Carlton Moor, which summits at 408m dominates the skyline.

Whorl Hill from Gold Hill Summit

From the top of Gold Hill there is a sweeping view across the plain of Mowbray. Whorl Hill is seen peeping over the bracken to the north west, and the finger of Bracken Hill is seen merging with Faceby Plantation to the north east.

Gold Hill Round Barrow

This small Round Barrow on Gold Hill follows the procession of Boundary Stones emanating from Lord Stones to the north and finishing at Faceby after it turns from the west point of Live Moor Ridge at Knoll's End.

Gold Hill Boundary Stone

The Coast to Coast path passes over the top of Gold Hill, close to its summit. Likewise, the long row of Boundary Stones also passes over the Hill. This Stone lies in the centre of the path and bears a large letter A deeply etched into its face with the initials DW above.
